Burning Effigy Fall Launch

I will be reading at the Burning Effigy Press Fall Launch event, which is taking place on Sunday, November 15th at The Central Restaurant & Bar (603 Markham Street in Toronto). The event marks the official release party for Ian Rogers' excellent novelette Temporary Monsters. Ian will be reading as well, along with poet Liisa Ladouceur and other B.E. authors.

Everything will get underway at 8pm. I do hope you'll come, especially since the story I'll be reading is about you.

Word on the Street

Burning Effigy Press will be present at this year's Word on the Street literary festival at Queen's Park in Toronto. The event takes place on Sunday, September 27th from 11am to 6pm.

I will be on hand to sign copies of Primeval Wood from noon until 1pm, and I'm happy to report that my friend Ian Rogers will be signing his brand new horror chapbook Temporary Monsters tomorrow as well, along with a number of other B.E. authors. If you're attending WotS, be sure to stop by the Burning Effigy booth and say hello.

Signing at Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear

I'm very pleased to report that I will be signing copies of Primeval Wood at the 2009 Rue Morgue Festival of Fear, which takes place August 28th - 30th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (222 Bremner Blvd., South Building).

I'll be signing at the Burning Effigy Press table, which will be located in the Horror Area (Where else would you look for me, really?) of the convention centre. My signing times are:

Saturday, August 29th - 11am until 2pm
Sunday, August 30th - 11am until 1pm

There will be other BE horror authors signing throughout the weekend as well, so I encourage you to stop by and support a great local small press who are doing their part for horror.

The guest list for this year's FoF is impressive as always and once again showcases the genre's many facets (literature, film, visual arts, music). Rue Morgue's is truly the Godzilla-on-steroids of horror conventions. It's a massive, blood-spattered juggernaut that is frankly so much fun it should be illegal. I'm extremely honoured to have been invited to be a part of it.

Primeval Wood cover art revealed

I am extremely pleased with the subtle and eerily evocative cover art that my multi-talented friend/editor Monica S. Kuebler put together for Primeval Wood.
After recently reviewing the galleys, I was struck with a renewed sense of pride in this tale. I hope all who read it are entertained and inspired by it. I also hope that the book does Burning Effigy proud.
Just eight more days and a copy of this handsome chapbook can be yours...or you can wait two extra days and drop by the launch at The Central on the 31st to get yourself a signed copy!

They say the Devil's in the details, so...

Primeval Wood release date

I am very happy to report that Burning Effigy Press has announced the release date for my novelette of supernatural terror:

Primeval Wood will be officially available for purchase on Friday, May 29th.

A brief teaser about the chapbook has been posted on the Burning Effigy Press website, which you can view here. Orders may be placed directly through the publisher's store beginning May 29th.

Burning Effigy has built a solid line of horror chapbooks since 2007. It is my sincere hope that Primeval Wood upholds their tradition of excellence.

Be sure to keep your eyes on Fear's Altar, as I'll be announcing the details about Primeval Wood's official launch event very soon!

Springtime in the Woods

It's official:

I am happy to report that Monica S. Kuebler, Editor-in-Chief of Burning Effigy Press, has confirmed that my novelette "Primeval Wood" will be among B.E.'s Spring 2009 line of horror chapbooks. You might recall that the manuscript was accepted back in the fall, but at that time their 2009 publishing schedule was still being ironed out. Now Burning Effigy is rolling forward full-steam and my novelette will be among their first releases of the year. The B.E. website will also have this announcement posted in the coming days.

Keep your eyes on Fear's Altar for updates in the coming weeks. Monica and I will be giving the manuscript a couple more passes before locking in the final draft. Cover art is in the works as well and will be posted here in due course. I can also promise plenty of public showboating as I flog "Primeval Wood" through official launch parties, readings, and other good things.

I'm very much looking forward to unleashing this tale upon the world. In many ways it is a marked departure from my previous work. I would describe this one as earthy. It's modern and strange and, I think/hope will chill you to the marrow.

And while we're on the subject of Burning Effigy's excellent line of horror chapbooks, I'd like to give a shout out to my friend Ian Rogers, whose novelette "Temporary Monsters" has been confirmed as one of B.E.'s Autumn 2009 chapbooks. Nicely done, Ian! I'm looking forward to prowling the Toronto-area literary events with you.

Lastly, for those who did not receive one of the postcards at any of the HWA dinners or recent booksignings I've done, what follows is a bit of teaser as to what you can expect from "Primeval Wood":

‘When Neil Kessler noticed the pale set of eyes staring out at him from the shaded tangles of hawthorn, he experienced what he believed to be a wholly new form of elation, one that crackled and thrummed well beyond the accepted human spectrum.

He soon realized that what blinked at him were not eyes at all, but tiny white blossoms; flowers that nonetheless seemed to glare out from some ecstatic mask.

Neil exhaled a blend of laughter and a sigh. Nature would never allow a thicket to sprout the perfectly-formed fetish of some leering daemonic child.

Yet that was what Neil was seeing, truly seeing…’
